Y6 Induction Day Friday 5th July 2024

Transition to Glossopdale School

We recognise that transition from Primary School to Secondary can be an anxious time for many children and their parents/carers and take every measure to ensure this is a smooth and enjoyable, exciting a process as possible.

We have a dedicated and experienced team who have successfully managed transition for several years:

Mrs S Gilbert – Assistant Headteacher (Lead for Transition)

Dr S Coimbra – Associate Assistant Head  Teacher-Progress, Key Stage 3

TBC – Year Manager (Pastoral Care)

Mrs L Barnfather- SENCO

TBC  – Year 7 Leader (Academic & Progress)

Once places have been secured through the Derbyshire admissions process, we contact all parents/carers to welcome them and their children with a pack providing key information on becoming a Year 7 student.  This includes; the school day, clear uniform guidance, Parentpay and school meals, pastoral support, the curriculum and groupings.

Working closely with our valued colleagues in local primary schools, a series of visits then begin to meet with headteachers and year 6 teachers to share detailed information on each child to support their transition.  This includes:

  • Pastoral information
  • Learning and ability including any Special Educational Needs
  • Recommendations for groupings

Year 6 children are invited to attend a series of extra-curricular/after school clubs at Glossopdale School for a wide range of interests from the summer term onwards such as:

  • Drama
  • Dance
  • Food Technology (Catering)
  • Design and Technology
  • Science
  • Computing
  • Art
  • Music
  • Sport/Football

In the summer term, we hold a new parents/carers Information Evening where we welcome you to Glossopdale, explain the transition process and you will have the opportunity to meet key members of staff who will be supporting your child in their transition.

One induction day take place in the first week of July when all future Glossopdale Year 7s spend full school days with us in their new tutor groups; learning about our values, expectations and routines and attending a series of sample lessons.  These will always include a range of Arts-based, core subjects and PE/Dance sessions and enable the children to begin to understand what life at Glossopdale School will be like; including learning our conduct and learning routines and  finding their way around the building!  Each tutor group has a number of our existing Year 7s as mentors/buddies for the day – children who they will recognise from their primary schools – and who assist and reassure the Year 6s about the exciting time ahead.

On their first day of school in September, all new Year 7 children will arrive in school before the older students, to ensure a quiet and calm environment for all staff to welcome them and begin their 7 year journey as a student of Glossopdale School.
