Theory lessons run throughout the year to revise the topics for the exam. An individual extended project, consisting of a design portfolio and a physical prototype, developed for a specific brief and evaluated by a client will run during lessons most of the year.
Assessment: Students will be assessed by milestone assessments (both written exam and practical assessments). There will be a mock written exam, using an exam board paper, in December. The NEA (50% of the grade) is an ongoing project throughout yr11 with a practical exam day on 19/3/20. |

Exam structure and content |
Unit 1 - Exam 2hr exam worth 50% of the final grade Pupils need normal writing equipment, a calculator and a protractor for the exam.
There are three sections; SECTION A - Core Technical Principles, multiple choice and shorter style questions on the basic core of the specification (types of materials, systems and mechanisms, and new technologies). SECTION B - Specialist Technical Principles, questions that require a more in depth knowledge of how products are made, scales of production and manufacturing. SECTION C – Designing and Making Principles, longer style questions on design strategies, the work of designers and how products are developed to suit the needs of users.
Unit 2 –NEA (coursework) 40 hour individual project worth 50% of the grade An extended project consisting of a design portfolio and a physical prototype developed for a specific brief (written individually) and evaluated by a client. |
