Exam based assessment. At least 15% of marks will be based on work done in practicals. 

Entry Requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above in different subjects including English and Maths. It is recommended a Grade 6 in Chemistry and 5s in the other sciences. If single sciences are not available at your school then you need two grade 6s in the GCSE Sciences that you are taking. 

Course Overview

A-Level Chemistry attempts to answer the big question 'what is the world made of?' and its the search for the answer that makes this subject fascinating.

Year 12

Physical Chemistry 

Including Atomic structure, amount of substance, bonding, energetics, kinetics, electrochemical cells and chemical equilibria and Le Chateliers principle.

Inorganic Chemistry

Including periodicity, group two the alkaline metals and group seven the halogens.

Organic Chemistry

Including introduction to organic chemistry, alkanes, halogenoalkanes, alkenes, alcohols and organic analysis.

Year 13

Physical Chemistry

Including thermodynamics, rate equations, the equilibrium constant kp and electrode potentials.

Inorganic Chemistry

Including properties of period three elements and their oxides, transition metals and reactions of ions in aqueous solution.

Organic Chemistry

Including optical isomerism, aldehydes and ketones, carboxylic acids and derivatives, aromatic chemistry, amines, polymers amino acids, proteins and DNA, organic synthesis and NMR.
